In my younger, more vulertable years, I found the truth behind butter and maregerine: Butter is WAY better than maregerine - I saw through the bullshite.

I like the taste of butter myself, although lately I do not use butter period.

Olive oil is better for you than most oils, but you do not want to go drenching your foods in it, its still high in cals AND fat, even the extra virgin olive oil, which is what I use.

Of course NOT eating is extremely bad for you. Your body goes into survival mode and stores everything as fats, because its very easy to store fats. As someone said before eating small meals and HEALTHY snacks (fruits and veggies) is IDEAL because it does help to keep your metabolism up, and when you do sit for a meal you are less likely to stuff yourself. I eat 6 times a day, of course 3 of these meals are things like fruits and vegetables, and protein shakes etc.

I can honestly say I have not eaten at mcdonalds in a little over a year. I eat lots of healthy fruits and veggies, lots of protein, and carbs, few fats. I would consider myself a healthy guy anyways. Problem with most of us in America is not alot of people have time to cook healthy meals, plus its cheaper to eat like crap.

Its basically cals in vs cals out (for losing weight), as for being healthy its a bit trickier. Sure you can eat 1500 cals worth of mcdonalds fries and still lose weight, but its not healthy at all. 3,500 cals = a lb of fat, eat in excess and you eventually gain weight. Monitor yourself and eat good healthy food, you lose weight. Add to that exercise and you are doing that much more for your body.

Its important to take care of yourselves guys, change your lifestyles and I guarantee you will lead a much better life.

Butter/margerine, it doesn't matter to me, if it tastes good I eat it, if I don't like it I won't, simple as that. I've never been concerned with eating a healthy diet or excercise, haven't been before not going to start now.

Thats exactly the ignorance that leads to our healthcare costing tax payers billions a year. Im not saying you are a fat slob or anything like that, but I guarantee your health will not last you very long without long term problems. Eventually, it will catch up to you.

I know of people whose life of bad food habits has lead them to contract cancer of the colon which ultimately ended in them having to have a colostomy.

I like the idea of healthly eating. I don't fancy having my arsed sown up and shittin in a bag attached to my stomach for the latter years of my life.

Just because you feel healthly now doesn't mean it won't catch up with you. Bad eating habits have a cumulative effect.

It's not just feeling healthy, it's been verified by lab tests/physicals for llife insurance and my own personal physician, who doesn't even mention the few extra lbs I carry. It's all about the genetics, and I use stress, anger, and hatred as health management tools. I use what little love I have to keep my mind blurred and foggy.

While I agree that Margarine is not a good alternative to butter, some things in that letter are a little misleading. There is another message that is sometimes shown along witht that one, heres most of it. Keep in mind that these are not my words, they are simply another view on the subject.

Quote:
It is true that a 1994 Harvard University study, as well as research from other credible sources have concluded that a diet high in Trans Fat doubles the chance for heart attack and decreases life expectancy. While trans fats can occur naturally, they are most commonly associated with chemical preservative techniques. Hydrogenation is one of these techniques and health experts recommend that you limit your intake of hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated foodstuffs as much as possible.

While butter and Margarine may indeed have similar caloric values, butter generally ranks higher in saturated fat, which is also known to be detrimental to heart health. Margarines differ from brand to brand, but are lower in saturated fat, and contain small amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (which are generally considered healthier than saturated). Furthermore, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, switching to margarine from butter can greatly reduce blood cholesterol levels.

The final argument in the letter above is what has make it so popular, but is also the farthest from reality and preys on the lay man's general ignorance of chemistry. It is not true that margarine is "but ONE MOLECULE from being PLASTIC." Many items in nature are chemically similar to one another, but that doesn't make them similar in appearance or effect. For instance hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2) is "but one molecule from" water (H 2O), but I don't recommend drinking it. Similarly, Ozone (0 3) is "but one molecule from" oxygen (O 2), but the former can create serious respiratory distress, while the latter can alleviate it.

Here's another tidbit to add to the arsenal of facts:

Margarine is made by bubbling hydrogen gas through vegetable oil in the presence of platinum plates.

Butter is made by agitating whole milk until the milkfats leave suspension and clot together.

Butter tastes better to me and if people have been using butter for hundreds of years there's a reason for it and that is that it just taste's better.

But both have drawbacks and both have advantages but Butter comes out on top

Well, the bigger reason people have been using butter for thousands of years is that the technology to make margarine is fairly recent.

At least margarine is still fat-based. I could tell you about microcrystalline cellulose, which is a fat substitute used in industrial food processing that is nutritionally inert yet feels like butter in food.

Thank you thread for turning me away from butter and margerine.

And that was a pretty comical Seinfeld episode.
